Question: My doctor feels that my back pain may be from a weak back. How is that possible when I work out all the time?

Answer: A person can be strong in the legs and arms, but still have a weak back. Often the back is the weak “link” in the chain. We have seen this frequently in patients who look well-conditioned, including athletes, but have a weak back. Weakness in the back or surrounding pelvic and abdominal muscles can lead to back pain. Physical therapist can do a comprehensive evaluation and educate you in proper strengthening techniques to improve back strength and reduce back pain. For more information, please contact Debbie at
