Question: My child has sustained a concussion and has been out of school. How and when should my child return to school?

Answer: After a concussion students are often instructed not to return to school until postconcussive symptoms have significantly improved. If your child has missed more than a week of school, he/she should be evaluated by a speech-language pathologist (SLP) who specializes in concussion. The SLP can develop a Return to School Plan that is specific to your child, including when to return. Many times the student will initially return to school part-time and then build up to full-time. The SLP can also identify and recommend any short-term accommodations that can help the transition back to the classroom.
