Question: I just found out I have prostate cancer and I am going
to have surgery. My doctor wants me see a physical
therapist first. How is that going to help me?
Answer: A physical therapist trained in pelvic floor rehabilitation can instruct you in pelvic floor muscle exercises. Doing these exercises before you have surgery can decrease the leaking and speed your return to normal function after the surgery. A specially trained physical therapist will also educate you on other modifications you can make before and after surgery to speed your recovery. Usually 1-2 visits pre-op and 2-4 visits post-op are all that is needed. For further information, or to schedule an appointment, please contact Deanna Ruppert, PT at 367-8989.
