Question: My shoulder has been bothering me for several months. I don’t remember doing anything specifically to injure it, but is hard to reach up to a shelf or put my hand behind my back. Reaching into the back seat or putting my coat on are also painful movements. Any advice?

Answer: The movements that are currently painful for you suggest problems with impingement in the shoulder. Insufficient rotator cuff strength, stiffness, and impaired posture can be contributors to causing this condition. A physical therapy evaluation would be helpful to determine what is going on and your potential to improve through conservative means. Improvement is often quite rapid with treatment, but not everyone gets complete relief. The information you receive at STARS will still be beneficial to your long term prognosis, please call 302-9850.
