Question: I have been noticing an increase in pain with use of my thumb when I pinch. Could hand therapy help this?

Answer: Arthritic changes at the base of the thumb can cause weakness and pain with pinching activities such as opening sealed bags and extended periods of writing. Occupational therapy can help with use of exercise, splinting, joint protection and ergonomic instruction to slow the progression of the arthritis and decrease pain with daily activities. See your physician who may refer you to therapy for intervention. Please contact Michelle at STARS at 288-4724 for more information.
